Cthulhu Thursday: Kick Back with a Packet of Dunwich Horrors…
Back in Lovecraft’s time everybody smoked, heck even doctors where used to advertise ’em as some kind of beneficial thing. …
Though I don’t belive that Lovecraft himself smoked. However if he did I have no doubt that the brand he would choose would be the sublime Dunwich Horrors (don’t confuse with Dunhill!) which are just the thing to enjoy as the stars become right…
There is a great PDF here of the packet, which you can print out and make your own! (Great prop for games of Call of Cthulhu.) However remember kids, smoking isn’t cool…
Ok? Good.
(Cthulhu Thursday is a dose of Mythos to brighten darken your week. More on the idea can be found here and a list of posts thus far, here. Also for more Cthulhu news, sign up to the cthulhuHQ twitter feed. Enjoy!)
These are pretty tedious to build accurately, but totally worth it.
You’ll need to cut open the cellophane at the top of the pack along the seal lines (you open the cello from the top because that’s the part you’re going to tear off and throw away. And the bottom has a nice real tobacco stamp on it anyways – I’d love to ersatz one of those).
Carefully remove the box from the cello. Open the box along the glueflaps and gently separate it from two foil wrapped cigarette bundles. Keep these bundles in as close to their original shape and condition as possible.
Print the PDF on cardstock (I have a sexy printer that can run silver ink. I print that and then put the bronze color over it). Trim, score and prefold the new wrapper (use the original to get the folds right).
Glue the bundles in, glue the pack together neatly.
Gently slip it back into the cellophane (I made a couple of shims out of an index card to assist this maddening process. The corners of the boxflap want, very badly, to tear up your nice work). With the shims still in, place a piece of clear tape, sticky side up, on the top of the pack and neatly place the top flaps of of the cello onto the tape.
Be as nonchalant as possible when opening and tossing away the repaired cellophane. It will take a person really paying attention to notice what you’re smoking.
Make a San check, and enjoy.
